WHAC Women’s Basketball Tournament Preview

By Seth J. Walker

This week marks the start of the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) women’s basketball tournament.  All first round games will be this Thursday at 7pm.  The semifinal games will be Saturday and the championship game on Tuesday next week.  Here’s a look at each first round matchup.

#1 Indiana Tech vs #8 Madonna- Indiana Tech surprisingly lost at Concordia in it’s regular season finale, but had already clinched the WHAC regular season title and top seed by beating Lawrence Tech.  Madonna back pedaled its way into the tournament with a five-game losing streak.  Madonna had one the best post scorers in the conference in Becca Sabol, but for the Crusaders to have any chance at all, especially against a Warriors team with Keanna Gary and Haley Cook among others, someone else must step up and be that secondary scorer.

Advantage: Indiana Tech

#4 Rochester College vs #5 Concordia- Rochester finished the regular season as the hottest team in the WHAC with four straight wins.  Concordia got a huge win on Senior Day over Indiana Tech, and coupled with Cornerstone’s loss to Lawrence Tech, clinched the fifth seed.  Rochester beat Concordia both times in the regular season, and will be at home Thursday.  Don’t count out Concordia though.  If Kari Borowiak had a 30-point game, like she did Saturday, there could be a different outcome.

Advantage: Rochester, though it could go either way.

#3 Aquinas vs #6 Cornerstone- The battle of Grand Rapids.  Aquinas won both regular season meetings.  Of course, Cornerstone probably didn’t count on Concordia beating Indiana Tech Saturday, or it would have faced Rochester instead.

Advantage: Aquinas, though Cornerstone shouldn’t be counted out.

#2 Lawrence Tech vs #7 Siena Heights- Lawrence Tech, picked sixth in the preseason poll, proved everyone wrong in the regular season, but now faces a Siena Heights team head coach Kylene Spiegel described as being very physical.  Lawrence Tech won both regular season meetings and is 3-0 over the last two year in home WHAC Tournament games.

Advantage: Lawrence Tech, but may be in for a tough battle.

Please be sure to check back here at Sports Source Media for updates on the tournament.  You can expect a full game story of the Lawrence Tech vs Siena Heights first round game, but scores will be provided for all games.  You heard it from me, Seth Walker.
